Ethics Policy

The principles that govern conflicts of interest, sourcing, and the conduct of Global Mail journalists.

Independence

Global Mail journalists do not work for, advise, or invest in the institutions they cover in a personal capacity. Reporters covering markets, politics, or government do not hold individual securities in companies on their beat or accept speaking fees from organisations whose work they report.

Gifts, hospitality and travel

Gifts of more than nominal value are declined or returned. Travel paid for by non-news organisations is permitted only in circumstances explicitly approved by the Standards desk, and is disclosed in the body of any resulting story.

Public conduct

Reporters do not participate in partisan political activity, do not sign political petitions on subjects they cover, and do not stand for elected office while employed by the paper.

Confidential sources

We protect the identity of confidential sources rigorously. The decision to use a confidential source rests with the section editor in consultation with the Standards desk, and the rationale is recorded internally.

Subjects of coverage

We treat subjects of stories with respect. We seek comment from anyone the subject of a critical story before publication, and we publish substantive responses.
