Diversity Policy

Our commitments on representation, sourcing, and the workforce that produces our journalism.

Why does diversity matter to The Global Mail?

A newsroom that resembles the world it covers produces better journalism. We therefore consider questions of representation in hiring, in the assigning of stories, and in the sources we quote.

What do you do about workforce diversity?

We publish an annual diversity report describing the demographic composition of the newsroom, our hiring funnel, and the steps we take to widen access to journalism as a profession — including paid internships, regional traineeships, and partnerships with schools of journalism in under-represented regions.

Do you measure the diversity of your sources?

We track, on a per-section basis, the gender and geographic diversity of the sources we quote. The data is shared internally each quarter and used to inform commissioning decisions.

How does diversity inform your coverage?

We commit to coverage that takes the lived experience of communities seriously, avoids gratuitous identification of ethnicity or religion, and uses the language that subjects of coverage themselves use.
